Last Friday, I heard the Philadelphia orchestra concert.
The program included a new clarinet concerto by George
Rochberg, written for Anthony Gigliotti. His performance
was splendid. He is retiring at the end of this season,
having been the principal clarinetist in the Philly since 1949.
I've always thought that his sound was the most exciting of
all American clarinetists: big, vibrant, pure. His is the
epitomy of the vibrato free sound. I was astounded by his ability -
even after all these years! Since I live near NYC, I am used to enduring
the whims of Drucker, who can sound either like a kazoo - or like
a great clarinetist.

The Rochberg deserves more performances. It is tonal, quite pleasant,
with quotations from Mozart, Berlioz, Mahler and others. It
has just one movement (almost 30 minutes long) and is very
difficult.

Has anyone else heard it?
