You should look into a book titled "Woodwind Instruments and their
History" by Anthony Baines. I can't remember the publisher, but it was
reprinted in paperback several years ago. This edition may be from
Penquin Books, but I'm not really sure.

Also, if you have access to a good library, look up the name Adam Carse.
He has written several books which might relate to your topic.
