My old Buffet B flat (marked "Buffet-Crampon a Londres", which nobody has
yet explained) certainly has NO significant tarnish on its keywork,
despite its age, and it certainly hasn't been polished since I bought it
in 1979. There are traces of verdigris in a couple of inaccessible spots
where water has leaked onto the keys. I suspect that the quality of
German silver used for instruments has deteriorated considerably over the
years. The base metal used for nickel or silver plated keys these days
has a definite copper colour - it can't be any kind of white bronze or
"nickel silver". ----- Roger Shilcock
