I disagree completely; Shifrin doesn't have two separate tones at all. I've
heard Shim play live on three separate occasions, and I remember his sound
being absolutely gourgeous every time, even when he played in a very small
and "dead" room.

I think it's a little unfair to judge his "live" tone by hearsay alone.
