I'll second that! This does point up something for me, though. I've
been told that Shifrin's sound, while round and gorgeous on recordings
(oh, it really is), is actually quite small when heard "live." It's
almost as if there are two separate realities: the recorded one and the
"live" one. Having spent so much of my life listening to recordings, I
suspect I don't have a terribly realistic understanding of most of the
big name clarinetists' sounds. A microphone just doesn't do the same
thing as my ear normally would. Nor do I mix and balance the sound in my
head when I listen to live performance.
