Certainly the most important clarinet method was Jean Xavier
Lefevre (1802) which was used at the Conservatory in Paris. It's
published today and you should be able to order it. It makes for
interesting reading and has a very remarkable fingering chart going up to
the double high c as well as 12 sonatas. There is a good picture of a
clarinetist (Lefevre?) with the reed on top of course. The book was the
first to push the sixth key (c#/g#). Good luck and be sure to start with
Rendall's The Clarinet.
