An obituary in the NY Times mentioned the death of Takemitsu. Within one
day, the death of Morton Gould was announced. In the music of Gould that
I have played (mostly orchestral works), I always found his clarinet
writing very idiomatic. Perhaps the bass clarinet part of the American
Salute caused me to think highly of him as an orchestrator. It is not
a solo part in any sense, but it is important and a delight to play.
I never played any of the music of Takemitsu. It did not appeal to me
as a player though I enjoyed Stolzman's performances of his creations
with Tashi.
Sad time for clarinet players.
