Ed, I discovered an advantage once when I ran out of Eb reeds and was still
able to practice by chopping some of those german cut reeds down! (My Bb
mouthpiece is cut to take the german as well as the french reeds, so I had a
few boxes lying around.) I also use the B44 mouthpiece, and although I
discovered that the german reeds work quite on my own out of necessity, I am
tempted to diddle with them again. I found the response and sound to be very
similar to that on the Bb, a nice big centered sound, but as on the Bb, the
german cut reeds changed character very quickly, and within a few days of
playing they were worthless.
