I just bought the new paperback Groves directly from them (800) number is in
the International Musician (AFM paper). $500/ + $25/shipping. No tax in my
state (CA).

I was recommended the Don Randal Harvard over the *Willi* Apel by a Music
Theory and History Professor at U Conn. That is good enough for me. But if
you are really serious about getting a great dictionary, the New Grove
Dictionary of Music and Musicians is now available in paperback for a
reasonable price (compared to the hard cover that is) For about $600-$700
you can have the greatest compilation of music article in the universe. Did
I hear that New Grove will be available on CD ROM? Would be nice, but
probably too good to be true.
