FWIW, I seem to remember Matt Matson remarking to me as he worked on one of
my mouthpieces (centuries ago, it seems like) that Wright's facing was
"crooked" because of years of wear and tear, that the rails were actually
tipped in slightly (I guess from ligature pressure) in addition to the
assymetrical curve. I think he said that Wright had simply gotten so used to
it that he kept using a crooked-curved facing to avoid having to
re-accomodate himself to anything different. That's a long time ago, and my
memory could be distorting the tale.
