There has been some recent interest in works for clarinet and
percussion so I am posting the program of a recital given by
the ASU Percussion/Clarinet Duo (J.B. Smith, percussion and
Robert Spring, clarinet) last Thursday evening in Tallahassee.

Corker for Clarinet and Percussion (1989), by Libby Larsen

Dialogue for Clarinet and Marimba-Vibes (1981), by Robert Schietroma

Going Home, In Memoriam Peter Lewis (1985), by Edward Miller

Prelude and Licks for Clarinet and Marimba (1981), by Chester Mais

Points in the Sky (1994), by Glenn Hackbarth

Illegible Canons (1973), William Bergsma

In Light of Three (1988), J.B. Smith

The encore was Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk, arranged
for clarinet and marimba.

The pieces were interesting and enjoyable listening, even to one
whose tastes run to older music. Most of them required one or
another of Spring's "extended techniques", and these were incorporated
in a seemingly effortless way into a very impressive performance.
I didn't take notes at the time, but I'm pretty sure that the Hackbarth
piece was the only one which required a mike on the clarinet. A couple
of the others used a synthesizer. The ensemble was superb. The program
notes were given verbally in a relaxed and engaging manner between
the pieces (giving time to rearrange the percussion equipment). Don't
miss these guys if you have a chance to hear them!
