I have an "Anvil" style road case. It is simply a rectangular road case
lined with foam, and I can fit my low C bass clarinet case neatly inside. I
have also used this case for tenor, or alto saxophones, clarinets and flutes,
as well as assorted stands. With the smaller instruments I add some loose
foam to keep things from bouncing around. I have never had a problem with
this case, and I have travelled a lot. Someone suggested the Yamaha bass
clar. case as a solution. This is the neatest case I have ever seen for a
low C bass, extremely compact and good looking. There are two problems:
your bass clar might not fit, and, even if it did, you run the risk of
having it rejected by a sharp-eyed stewardess. Sometimes you can fit cases
behind or in front of a bulkhead, but there is no guarantee, and you run the
risk of having to put the case underneath. I would be very uneasy about
this. I think the price of a road case with simple foam lining, large enough
to carry a low c bass clar or a tenor sax in a hard case, would be somewhere
between $250 and $300 (about the price you would pay to buy a separate seat
for your instrument. Lee Callet
