I've traveled by air several times with both my A/Bb double case and my
low-C bass clarinet. If at all possible, try to get a seat at the back
of the plane. After first-class passengers board, regular boarding
usually starts with those who have seats in the rear, thereby enabling
you to have dibs on storage compartments. Under no circumstances would I
allow any of my instruments to be checked into the cargo bay. This is
pretty obvious. If somebody makes a stink about your instruments,
particularly an airline official, you might have to consider doing what
Yo-Yo Ma does with Petunia (his cello): he buys a separate plane ticket
for it and puts it in the seat next to him.
