I just this weekend had one lent to me. I tried to use it in a couple of
rehearsals. I found myself wondering how long the ratchet mechanism would
last (as far as I can see the entire thing is plastic) before the teeth start
to break off. Maybe a long time, but I'm not sure. My main complaint about it
was that there was too much give in the mechanism to keep the barrel's tuning
stable when I had to pull the mouthpiece out or push it in during an
instrument change (from A to Bb or vice-versa). The tone quality seemed quite
acceptable and the response felt very close to my regular barrels.
I think this would be a great second barrel for use when the piano hasn't
been tuned in decades or you're playing in an unfamiliar orchestra that tunes
high. Instead of pulling your normal barrel out 2 or 3 mm for the piano and
carrying around very short barrels for very sharp orchestras, this one barrel
would settle all the extremes by itself.
