I have tried the reed soaking process and did not like the results.
I now have two reed cases (8 reed each). One case is my working case and
the other for new and dying reeds (mainly new) or if I have more than 8
good
reeds (ha, ha).
Reeds are selected based on sound and resistance. I pick reeds
that feel fine new or slightly resistant new (since they will soften in a
week). I've found that if I have a mix of slightly hard, slightly soft,
and just right reeds I can cover almost any atmospheric change.

When the reeds are new, I only play them from about 5 minutes a day
for the first week to 10 days. I also hold off on any adjusting or
balancing till after that first week. After that first week, I do my
adjusting and start rotating them into the working group of reeds. Ben
Armato's book is a real good guide for reed adjustment. You can either get
is from Ben or Muncy woodwinds handles it ($5.00). If you e-mail me
personally I will give you Ben's address.
