I had been exchanging some private mail about the Chedeville replica Bb
mouthpiece manufactured by Glotin. I thought I would post my findings
publicly. Last week (or something like that) there were some really
interesting postings by Brad Behn and Everett Austin about mouthpieces
generally, and with some specific reference to the Glotin Ched. replica
(that's what started the ball rolling). Also some interesting input by
Clarke Fobes.

I was able to fit a reed to this mouthpiece just recently which seemed to
allow me to hear it's best qualities. A mouthpiece to which I was
comparing the Glotin (the 06 facing) was one I consider similar in tip
opening and response: the Vandoren 5 RV Lyre. I would have to say that
the Glotin, compared to the Vandoren, demonstrates a pleasing "centered"
sound. I feel on the basis of a hunch that it does this by sacrificing
projection (bigness of sound). The Vandoren has a larger sound that tends
to be unfocused. In addition, for those who like it, this mouthpiece
plays with a representative (here come the adjectives)"hard", "glassy",
edgy timbre. I must say I am impressed with it (after many trial
playings) but prefer a warmer sound for myself.

I would prefer to leave the technical description of this mouthpiece to
Everett Austin, if he wishes to post it. I believe he owns a couple of
them. I have not been "looking" at the insides of mouthpieces long enough
to feel confident of my observations. I will note the windway walls of
the mouthpiece narrow as they move away from the table. I do not know if
this contributes to a large or to a small chamber. Oddly, my impression
is that the mouthpiece is small-chambered. Eyeballing the tip opening, I
perceive that this mouthpiece has an *extremely* small opening.
Subjectively, I feel this creates discomfort, or at best requires much
adjustment, in order to play artistically. However, the sound may well be
worth it. I think that this mouthpiece would become a very playable one
if professionally refaced. Again, Everett Austin has worked with them,
and he may make a note of his results.

Hi Bill,
Yes I am still interested in the Glotin Chedeville mouthpiece. I think I
posted this note for all to see. So...if there is anyone else out there
that has any information regarding the new Glotin Chedeville mouthpiece, I
would love to hear from you.
Thanks,
