Yes, the Vandorens are harder. According to a chart published by Vandoren, a
Rico 4 is about a Vandoren 3. If you were to go straight to a Vandoren 4, you
might be in for a bit of a shock. (My professor plays on 4's, if that's any
indicator.) You might go about breaking them in in this way, play on them a
little bit each day, 10 min for a for a day, then 20 min, 40 min, 1 hour. You
may have to spend more than one day at some of the shorter times, as some will
be harder than others. There are about a million different opnions out there
about how to break them in, this is just what I remember being taught. Good
