Chris,

In response to your message on the Klarinet list:

-----
Has anyone out there heard any excellent pieces for solo clarinet and
orchestra (excluding the Mozart, Weber, Francaix, Spohr, Nielsen, and
other standard rep.) I'm kind of interested in finding out what
contemporary pieces are available, but which haven't received much PR.

-----
Jorge Calandrelli, _Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra_. A great
piece. Recorded by Eddie Daniels about 10 years ago on his Breakthrough
album. (some say the CD is unavailable, but I recently saw it in the Dorn
music catalogue) I like this piece so much that I transcribed it for Wind
Ensemble accompaniment. Three movements: The first movement is "legit/jazz"
cross. The improvised section has a Stravinsky "Rite of Spring" influence.
(Stravinsky is Jorge's favorite composer) Second movement is a ballad.
Third movement is in compound meter with drive. The improvised sections
have optional written solos. I'm working with Jorge to prepare a piano
reduction and MIDI file available for purchase. Score and parts available
for rental from Theodore Presser.

Kenny Grant, clarinet teacher at Eastman School, recommended these works to
me:

Dan Welcher, _Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra_ A fun piece to play:
very jazzy but no improvisation. Movement II is marked Blues and Toccata
(on the name "Benny Goodman") The toccata section is something like Morton
Gould's Derivations for Band, third movement. (i.e., with drive!) Available
from Theodore Presser.

Benjamin Britten, _Clarinet Concerto_ "intended for Benny Goodman" I
don't know it all that well. 1st movement is in the same "with drive" style.

BTW, Any luck on influencing a re-release of the Wright recordings?
