For several years in the 1950's and into the early l960's Chicago Kaspar
had a shop in the FineArts Building (above the Studebaker Theater) on Michigan
Avenue in Chicago. This building contained several studios--many of them
used by CSO players. If my memory serves me right--Bill Brannen occupied
this space after Kaspar moved to Cicero. I may be wrong but I believe my
first mouthpiece purchase at the shop--or through my teacher--cost $16--
a long time ago--but I may have the records somewhere. I believe the
13 designation (very popular) was the marking for a 1.13 tip opening.
Goldbeck was indeed the pre-cursor--I remember one of my teachers-
David Glazer's old Goldbeck mouthpiece--silver rails and tip with the

outside shell of rubber. Very heavy but also very permanent.

I apologize if this seems rather rambling--but I was a kid--travelling
to Chicago from Milwaukee on the old NorthShore electric railroad--
pre I94 times. I was in awe of everything--I only wish I would have
realized how much I was a part of when I was in "it"! But they are
fond memories. I also recall several fine Stowell-Wells-Scheider
mouthpieces from those days and my time at Northwestern.
