Hi everyone, I'm having difficulty tongueing (ok, enough innuendo...)

I am in concert band at MSU and we are playing Samuel Barber's Commando =
March.
At one point, the piece requires 16th notes articulated. The tempo =
indication
on the piece is quarters at 144, our director is saying 138-ish, which =
really
isn't any easier, IMHO. I have been spending quite a bit of time with my
metronome, and I can't do it. I am rather frustrated since I can say " =
ta ta ta
ta..." at the tempo with no difficulty, but once I have my horn in my =
mouth,
the response is slow and it seems like I can't tongue as fast as I did =
before.
Also, the notes are pretty high (leger line E ) and they sound squeaky. =
What's
up? Would a harder reed help?

Hi Cathleen;

One important element in tonguing ( that we sometimes forget) is the =
air stream. If the air stream is to slow the tongue does not rebound as =
off the reed precisely. Experiment with tonguing a scale and changing =
the stream from slow to fast and tongue a c maj scale. Ask yourself =
where the sound of the attack is best? =20
Another factor to remember is the tongue is a muscle that needs to =
develop. Start slow and practice with a Metronome. You will reach a =
tempo
that will be as fast as you can single tongue and that is OK. =20
Try to experiment with syllables you think of when tonguing. Instead =
of=20
ta or ti try Na. Na seems more like the tongue coming off the reed =
rather then hitting the reed. Try a this little exercises with your =
met. first think your play some scale. then speak na na na na na rest =
na na na na na rest ect. then play the scale just like that. then add =
a beat of tongued 16th until you can play the whole thing. Work at =
different tempi and you will be doing well. I hope this helps a little.
