Marie McDonough makes a good point about lack of support from districts making
it hard for those without extra cash to keep their children in arts program.
As a public school music teacher in the 60s, I took groups to festivals, all-
state, and on tours--and the district paid everything. As a community college
music teacher in the 70s and 80s, I took groups on tours--and the school paid
for everything. This winter, as an orchestra parent, I just paid out over $750
for my son to go to all-state, an orchestra trip, and an ensemble trip, and
that doesn't count all the food money. As far as I can tell, the district
isn't paying for anything. Things have certainly changed. When you add in
today's highly inflated cost for instruments, it's hard to see how anyone with
a limited income can let their children participate.
