This is an example of why we CAN'T just feel that it is not worth
changing people's minds! With apologies for straying off the topic even
more than we have, the seemingly insignificant school board is the admitted
starting position (as stated in speeches by such people as Jerry Fallwell,
Pat Buchanan, etc.) for extreme-right Christian Coalition politicians who
have aspirations for much more influential political posts. If we say to
ourselves, "It's only a stupid school board - what good will it do?", we
enable these close-minded people to spring into city/county councils, state
senates, congress, etc., where they can have an even more devastating
effect on the programs with which they dont agree: imagine, rather than
just cutting the music program at a local school, cutting it for an entire
state - or eliminating funding for the arts (sound familiar?)! Like it or
not, school boards are very much politics, and require careful scrutiny!
