Dan,
I once had a theory professor that said a theme and variations is
the hardest form to write. A meal isn't complete without dessert. What
about solo de concours pieces?
I like to include one of these treats for the audience on a
recital. It's usually a break for the pianist and for the audience
(nothing like Jean Jean to clean the palate after Brahms, Reger, Hindemith,
etc.). Actually the form I find hard to program is too long solo clarinet
pieces. It's not like doing a Bach cello suite (on bass clarinet of
course!).

Dan
