Bill,
I can and do "voice" and tune clarinets when necessary. I do not
ream the bores of clarinets, because in my opinion that would ruin the
intonation schema. I make custom barrels and am experimenting with
bells.
If a particular tone is small or "bright" sounding compared to it's
neighbors, I can usually correct that without changing the pitch too
much. If a tone is dull I usually open the hole diametrically, but that
does increase the 12th ratios a bit. I wrote an article about this in
"The Clarinet" in 1986 . It is contained in Vol. 13, no. 2.
I am considering a new article that would present most of the old
information along with specific instructions for correcting fairly
consistent faults that I run across in Buffet clarinets.
Generally I prefer the player to be in my shop as I adjust the
instrument.
Clark W Fobes
After Clark wrote that I say:
I have found Clark Fobes work to be most excellent. He selected and tuned a
clarinet for me. Matched some of his barrels to the clarinet, and sent me 2
excellent mouthpieces.
I would take his advise on this subject and reccomend his services to all on
the list. Mr. Fobes is an expert!
