Good to see a plug for chamber music playing from Jonathan Cohler. For the
nonprofessional musician, this is a real "life-line" of musical expression
and there are wonderful networks of enthusiastic chamber musicians on various
geographical scales form local to worldwide. The orchestra, as wonderful as
it is, could restrict one's scope and generally the kind of fraternity (or
sorority) of chamber music is not necessarily there. There are generally
many more rests in the orchestra, too, at times more challenging than the odd
phrase or two separating them! I regret somewhat not discovering the riches
of chamber music until adulthood, which again reflects some of the
pedagogical trends Jonathan mentions. Many people who love music do
eventually spend their days in other careers, yet the world must be a better
place for those who still appreciate and serve that Muse when they can.
Teachers should keep this in mind as they impart a musical perspective to
their charges.
