Hi all!
I know that this has litlle to nothing to do with clarinets (You may
delete now, if you wish.), but this may make SOMEONE's day. And you never know,
there may be doublers out there... Anyway:

FOR SALE - silver Besson 4-valve Euphonium w/ compensating
mechanism (1-3 & 1-2-3 are no longer sharp!). The horn is in MINT condition -
gorgeous! The "compensating mechanism" does not include the fourth valve, but I
am told that this is normal.
Asking price for this horn is $3000.00 . I saw the instrument today
when I picked my bari sax up from an overhaul. The owners say that they will
entertain offers.

(BTW- the "Compensating mechanism" consists of an extra valve slide on
each of the three valves. The problem is this- in order to drop the pitch of
the horn by a 1/2 step, the length of the bore must be increased by a certain
percentage. When valves are depressed, this increases the length of the bore.
Second valve lowers the pitch 1/2 step when used alone. If first-&-third are
already down, the second valve slide is not long enough, _as a percentage of
the total bore_ for the pitch to drop an entire 1/2 step. Second valve is not
the only one involved in this problem... Trumpet players compensate for this
by lengthening their third valve slide by extending their left-hand ring/fourth
fingers. Some trumpets also have a "saddle" on the first valve slide for a
similar (thumb) reason.)

I stand nothing to gain from this transaction. I've known the Richmond
family, owners of The Wind Works, for nearly 15 years; I taught private lessons
in the store in my college years. As far as I know, they have never wronged
anyone. For example, my bari sax didn't need too much tweaking. My
instructions to them were, "Fix whatever isn't right." The overhaul bill was
$25.00 . This is honesty.
Please forward this wherever it will do the most good. Thanks much.
