Gregory: The Cliff Notes version of the three instruments you asked about
are: the basset clarinet is a clarinet pitched in A or Bb, invented by
Anton Stadler and used for the Mozart Clarinet concerto and other works.
It has an extension down to low c on it. The basset clarinet however is
pitched in F, also extends down to low c, and is used in Mozart Serendes
among other works. The alto clarinet is pitched in Eb, only extends down
to low Eb, and is used mostly in band music. If you would like to know more
please feel free to contact me at the e-mail address listed below and I
will be happy to give you the in depth info.
