Risking more "margerine for butter" barbs, I'd have to say that it
would depend on the part! I don't think I would agree with wholesale
replacement of the clarinet by soprano, but if there were some parts that
had more of a sax style, why not? This past Spring, I was the only wind in
a 4-piece pit orchestra, and there was at least one place where I decided
that the clarinet part worked much better on soprano (mostly for volume
reasons!).
