The Clarinet Choir at Kneller Hall when it was under the direction of
Paul Harvey--used basset horns in place of alto clarinets--Paul felt
the transposition exercise was "good for the lads". Our wind ensemble
is preparing the Ingolf Dahl Sinfonietta for the next concert and one
of the lucky clarinet pupils has the alto clarinet solo to prepare. We
own what I assume is a first rate alto (Selmer Paris). But the instrument
is really hard to make sound. As this student learns to live with it and
the Dahl I will let him field any questions. I hesitate to let him use
my basset horn for the task.
