Paul,

Learn the technique of legato tonguing. This will help you be able to have
a faster articulation. Work slow and gradually increase your tempo, until
you have it at the desired speed.

As for improving your sound, think of whistling. This flattens the "chin", or
better yet, the part between the lip and the chin. It also places the tongue
in the right position to play at the highest point for each pitch. This will
also pull the muscles in around the mouthpiece.
