About the Mozart Concertante:

i join the others who do not feel sufficiently erudite to comment. however,
i have a friend (martha kingdon ward) who has been studying mozart since she
was 13 or so. she is also a professional clarinettist, and one of the best,
in my opinion.

since she is now about the same age as the venerable Leeson, she also has
picked up quite a lot of knowlege about Mozart, and this is her opinion:

she agrees that the concertante is probably NOT by Mozart, but she can't
agree with all of Dan's arguments for this. It's not really true (or
so she says) that the return of the quartet bit after the orchestral
interlude is exactly the same as the first time, because the instruments
come in in different order.

(as far as we know) Mozart did not do other concertantes for 4 instrumen ts,
and comparing it with music for other combinations may not be the right
metric.

mozart DOES break with tradition, such as when he brings the piano in
straightaway in the K271 piano concerto.

what is the point, she adds, in having a flute version of the concertante,
as we are not sure it ever was for flute? (we know for sure that a
Concertante was written by Mozart for his friends....it is a historically
undeniable fact. but we do not know that K297 is it).

she also invites speculation on who DID write it. she is sure that Crusell
had the ability, but it seems unlikely, since he was very well known. one
of the bohemians, perhaps?
