Hi... this is in reply to the request for some info about Stadler.

There are two stories about him and mozart that are a bit amusing.
First, is that Stadler complained to Mozart about a difficult passage in
the Concerto. Mozart asked him if he has "those tones in your
instrument". Stadler replied that they were inside. SO Mozart told him
that "If they are inside, it is your business to bring them out"

Also, supposedly, Stadler borrowed the original manuscript of the
Quintet, and later claimed to have lost it. Some time later, Mozart
found out that he had actually sold it for 73Ducats.

These are taken from a book I found in the childrens section of my local
library, called "The Clarinet and Saxophone Book" by Melvin Berger. It
has a chapter on how clarinets are made, and how saxes are made. It has
some wonderful photos, including one of Sigurd Rascher, holding a
straight sopranino, a curved soprano, with an alto around his next, and a
tenor, baritone, bass and contrabass saxes on stands around him. The
contrabass is HUGE. The caption says there are less than 10 in the
world.

The book is quite good, but out of date. For example, the following
sentence illustrates that point: "New clarinets range in price from about
$200 for a plastic instrument to nearly $1,000 for a very fine wood one.
Used instruments, of course, cost less.:
