I could have sent this privately, but the rest of the board may find
a move away from cork grease a pleasant diversion.

Lyanna, there is a dissertation by the Dutch musicologist Bastiaan
Blomhert on his discovery of a monster wind octet (more than an hour
long) on Mozart's Abduction. In the dissertation Blomhert describes
the circumstances of the discovery and, because of those circumstances
he suggests that this is the very arrangement made by Mozart. I am
not going to argue that question, it is not relevant to your inquiry.

However, part of the argument he uses is where the parts for this
octet were originally found and it is at this point that Stadler
is tied into the drama. He suggests Stadler had the parts and left
(sold, lost, gave, ??) them to some facility in Strassbourg where
he was living, touring, passing through, etc. It is all very hazy
to me now because it has to be 8 years since I read the dissertation
(which is in excellent English, by the way). But Stadler's
involvement in the latter part of his life is discussed (or
hypothesized) in some detail. This scenario is in no other source
that I know of, and even should you find it doo-doo, you should know
what it says. And the reason why this is important is that the
Stadler story involves not only the parts for this wind octet but
also the autographs to the concerto and quintet. It is a very
big bite, and I do not wish to offer my opinion on its tastyness
(or is it tastiness?). You read it and decide for yourself.

The dissertation, unlike many others, was published as a book and
should be available on inter-library loan from somewhere. I own
a copy.
