When I was studying clarinet as a high school student in the Los Angeles
area, my teacher, whose name was Bob Nelson, acquired a Bb and A set of
clarinets made by Horst Moennig. This was in the late 50's. I didn't know
enough to make any kind of a judgement about the playing quality of the
instruments, but I remember that they were incredibly beautiful, and I don't
think I ever saw Bob Nelson more excited about anything, before or after. He
is retired to Cherry Valley, near San Bernardino, and is probably 90 years
old, and he probably still has that set of clarinets. Lee Callet
