Nick Winkler mentioned in an earlier post that he had a
Baxter-Northup Clarinet with Horst Moennig's name on it. This spurred
me on to a little more research and I picked up a few new points.

W.Hans Moennig and Horst Moennig were brothers. Possibly twins as
both have birth years of 1903. Horst died in 1959 and Hans in 1988.

They were sons of Fritz Monnig who was co-proprietor with his
brother Hans of "Monnig Gebruder" (sorry, no umlauts on my machine)
in Markneukirchen, Germany. There was a very extensive family of
Monnigs in Markneukirchen building instruments since the early 1800,s.
They were primarily builders of clarinets and flutes. The Gebruder
Monnig in 1928 was one of the largest factories. In 1929 they had a
work force of 50 and in 1938 a workforce of 109!

Interestingly, they reported 6,000 metal clarinets made between
1926 and 1931.

Horst emigrated to Los Angeles in 1924 becoming a flute maker for
Baxter-Northup Co. He married a Baxter daughter and in 1935 became an
independent maker.

Brother Hans emigrated to the us in 1926 and enjoyed a
distinguished career in Philadelphia 1931-1983.
