Mary: There are several methods for repairing cracks. One is to have the
crack pinned which involves sinking pins into the wood of your clarinet at
angles that will pull the crack together. A good repairman can do this
fairly easily and at a minimal cost to you. Another methos is banding
where they put bands around the crack. This method works on some areas of
the clarinet and not on others, i.e.if the crack runs under the top trill
keys or around the register key area. The third method for repairing cracks
is to use super glue. What this method involves is filling the crack with
super glue. The glue adheres to both sides of the crack, thus when the
crack tries to open and close during swelling and shrinking it doesn't open
up. Again, a good repairman can fill you in on which method is best for
your crack(s) and give you your financial options. I might suggest you
contact Denny Lawso of Denny's Instrument Repair, in Davenport Iowa. I do
not have his phone # here but the area code for IA is 319, so just dial
1-319-555-1212 and ask for Denny's Instrument Repair. Denny is quite the
repairman and he is most knowledgeable as well. Oh yeah, did I mention he
is very reasonable??
As for the sound changing once you have the instrument repaired the answer
is, in my experience, no. In fact some players say their clarinets play
better once they crack because the instrument becomes more free blowing. I
am not certain if this is true or not.
