The confusing bit is that all the people I have asked so far have all
been playing for many years as opposed to my few months. They
can't all be right (or can they?).

And how can several different people who all seem to be
successful musicians have such different ideas on what I would
have assumed was a fairly simple topic?

Mickie: better get used to it right now!!! ESPECIALLY musicians talking
about instruments/technique!!!
