In the new Pierre Boulez recording of the Debussy 1ere Rapsodie, Franklin
Cohen uses the type of vibrato you mention and in the earlier PB record de
Peyer also uses vibrato, but quite freely.

I was not taught saxophone vibrato with any particular vowel, but VAH seems
better than WAH, because it retains a rounder position of the lips similar to
the rounded embouchure the student should have. THe metronome is pretty much
indispensible. Londeix recommends playing long tones on scales and sometimes
alternating straight and vibrato tones to increase control. A wonderful
exercise is to play the Ferling Etudes on saxophone with three pulsations to
the beat at mm 72 or 76 (eg eight note @-----.
