Dear Don,
I quite share your reactions regarding a lot of vocal music, and I suppose
like many, Fischer-Dieskau is the person I most associate with wonderul
Schubert, Schumann, Mahler and Brahms lieder, although lately I am quite fond
of Jose van Dam as well. Since I have always been partial to instrumental
music, when I listen to singers I find their timbre and pitch make a lot of
difference in their appeal, along with other musical qualities and diction.
Anyway, subjective as it all may be, I certainly agree with your comments.
