Do either of you believe that the quality of Signets has changed over time?
When I was in middle school and my mother bought me an old
used
signet that had been sitting in an attic for years. It
smelled dusty and the pads were all but disintegrated, and so we took it to
Meridian Winds, a reliable establishment, and they told us that with new pads,
some adjustment, and a good polish, it'd be a good horn for a kid. That Signet
served me well all through middle school and in high school, it took the abuse
of marching season, so my precious Buffet wouldn't get wet, dirty, or dropped.
I spent a summer at Interlochen in the All State band and some of the people
ahead of me played on old Signets. I guess it just depends on the individual
instruments. I personally would reccomend them to middle schoolers since they
are easy to find for a good price, and most of the ones I have heard were
decent instruments. (I still have my old Signet, thought of selling it, but it's
too setimental, I learned to love the clarinet on that old beater, kinda like
the memory of a first car or a first kiss) ;)
