These comments are in regard to recent postings re Richard Stoltzman. I
don't know what the majority of professional players or otherwise think of
his playing, but I think his legato is one of the most beautiful I've
heard, and I am a great admirer of Harold Wright, who was generally praised
for this quality in his performances. Stoltzman records a lot,so it's only
natural that you might greatly prefer one performance over another, but for
those who are curious, you should listen to his Weber Quintet and Ingolf Dahl
Trio on RCA if it's still available. To me, this is representative of his
very best playing. vibrato is such a personal matter, especially when the
majority of American clarinetists don't use any, that I'm doubtful of any
thing near consensus on the topic. Not that it should't be discussed. To
close, I would describe Stoltzman as a warm, expressive player, who has a
lot to offer. I'm surprised the string player's in Bruce Hudson's posting
did'nt like him, since they don't have any ideological baggage to carry
around re the right way to play the clarinet.
