This is a very interesting comment about the relationship between
response and pad material. I have been following closely the notes here
about the subject since introducing a question about it a week ago. The
material has been helpful and I've learned (as usual) a great amount.

I wonder if cork has the same effect on the speaker key---damping the
tone too rapidly? I am thinking of having my R-13 speaker key corked and
I think that's why I posed the question in the first place. I suppose I
could just go home and try one of my horns that has the cork. But then,
how can one compare anything, it seems to me, between two clarinets? Too
many variables!

I find playing on a corked upper joint is too percussive: The pads seem to
cover the holes too quickly making the response too abrupt. I like the
more squishy response time of regular pads, it seems to soften the note
response
