I used to tap my foot all the time, until my high school teacher
told me that it was distracting to the audience. Then, I would just tap
my foot when I practiced. But one time I was in a sort of special group
lesson with Anthony Gigliotti of the PHiladelphia orchestra, he told me
that often what you tap and what you play are two different things, and
that tapping your foot can distract you more than it helps. Sometimes,
for difficult rhythms, I can't help it, but I have really tried to break
the toe tapping habit.
