I also tap my foot when I play clarinet. I have had teachers encourage me to
tap my foot and look to see if it was occurring (elementary school). I also
had a conductor tell the band (at an all-county rehearsal in Jr. High) that
we were not to tap their foot at _all_. He said that it distracted the
audience. That was when I first heard of just tapping with my toe inside the
shoe.

My toe tapping varies depending on what I am playing. If the music is
straight forward (no difficult rhythms) I may just tap my toes inside my
shoes.

If the music is rhymically challenging I may tap the sub division. I also
place slash marks in the music showing where the downdeats are. I also find
myself using more of my foot in the tap.

Who knows- maybe tomorrow I will find myself doing something completely
different.
