I play a Selmer model 33 bass clarinet and so does my good friend, Michael
Lowenstern, whose solo Bass Clarinet CD will be released sometime next
year on New World Records (and is it ever mind boggling playing)!

The 33 has been replaced by a new model, which both Mike and I have tried
two samples of. The first one was a superb instrument, with keywork far
more reliable than our own bass clarinets (the fingerings for the
extension notes are now basically the same as Buffet bass cls).
unfortunately, it was pitched at A@-----. A second
instrument was quite good but Michael wants a great instrument, not merely
a good one.

Many orchestral players have switched from Selmer to the new Buffets
recently. I haven't played any Buffets but have heard wonderful things
about them. Michael simply prefers the tone quality of the Selmer
instruments, which is more rugged. Hope this helps some. Do try as many
instruments as possible before buying.
