Bill Fogle,

One usually uses a cork pad for the register key because of the metal
tone hole. The skin on a traditional felt pad could stick to the metal
when it is wet (and subsequently dries) causing it (the skin) to rip.

Many players in the US prefer cork pads on the upper joint. Some only on
the register key, the Eb/Bb key and the F#/C# key (the 2 lower side keys
of the upper joint).

Some players even prefer leather pads. Synthetic pads are also used but
are not as widely accepted (tradition).

I have more information on padding and pads. If you are interested in
this info, I will try to post it later.
