Several recent postings have expressed positive views of Reginald Kell's
unique interpretations, and his courage in exploring his own musical
intellect. It seems we have another controversial musical interpreter among
us today--Richard Stoltzman.

I have colleagues who won't even listen to Stoltzman anymore--they feel
Stoltzman's interpretations are completely without basis in musical
tradition, or they seem to feel that his interpretations are composed of
random musical gestures which do not relate to one another in the course of
the overall musical dialogue. And, some seem to say he interprets all music
in the same manner, regardless of style.

Conversely, I notice that some have great regard for Stoltzman. The feel he
is an original thinker who brings a fresh look to the standard repertoire.

Controversy!

I'm curious to hear some comments about Kell and Stoltzman. If you do not
care for one but enjoy the other, why? It seems both have original musical
approaches...how do you draw your distinctions?
