This topic reminds me of something I have been curious about. When I
studied clarinet in the late 50s through the 60s, I do not ever
remember any discussions of reed storage. For the most part we kept
our primary reed on our instrument, and spares in the cardboard reed
holders that were common at that time. My teacher has at least 25
years experience as a pro and a teacher. He was a stickler for many
things but reed storage was not one I recall. During the mid-60s
I had a great deal of contact with good high school clarinetists in
Southern California and don't think I would have missed this.
(However, we were not nearly as focused on equipment as seems to be
the case today.)

When did the use of reed holders become widespread?
