The Vandoren 5RV lyre is a fine professional mouthpiece. I've been using
this mouthpiece for at least five years now, with much satisfaction. The
mouthpiece provides good basic intonation on my set of Buffet R13s, and
fits Vandoren V-12 reeds very well.

There are other Vandoren mouthpieces that are perhaps better suited to
young students. I recommend the 5RV lyre to both professionals and college
students. As with all mouthpieces, they of course vary from one mouthpiece
to the next. But, given a trial of three or four, chances are good that
you will find one that suits you.

Along the lines of mouthpieces, something I have always misunderstood: the
extent of handwork done on the so-called "hand-faced" mouthpieces for sale
in some music stores alongside those with a factory stamp on them. How and
how much do these mouthpieces differ from assembly-line ones?I would love
to see some feedback about this.
