Leslie,
I have only had experience with Selmers and Buffets but I have
been extremely disgusted with their tuning. I am told that Leblancs have
the same tuning problems. Surprisingly, the best c-clarinet I ever tried,
and this has also been backed up by others, was the Noblet. Yup, that's
right. The student line of Leblanc. It just tunes correctly. I suspect
that all C's have a problem because the mouthpiece is the wrong length
and even, possibly, size for the instrument. After all, E-flat clarinets
have a different mouthpiece. So do D clarinets (which use the E-flat
mouthpiece). I'll bet that if you got a couple of old mouthpieces and
shortened them by about an eighth of an inch they'd tune pretty well. Now
that's an idea for an experiment, all you clarinet techs out there. Anyway,
that's my $.02 on the issue.
